When I was traveling through British Colombia, I expected to see a few deer and maybe mountain goats. Being more of an "indoor girl", I was looking forward to expanding my horizons a bit. However, I never expected for THIS to happen.
My boyfriend at the time stopped on the side of a road in the wee hours of the morning to answer nature's call. Turning my head as far away from the bushes he has standing behind, I looked at the patch of woods on the other side of the road. My jaw flung open when I saw a great lumbering blob rustling around a blackberry bush. I couldn't believe my own eyes, so I rubbed them a few times, assuming I was just tired. I looked again. Lo and behold, I saw no lumbering blob. Breathing a small sigh of relief, I leaned back on my seat and my eyes wandered over to the rear view mirror. This time, I knew I wasn't seeing things. Sniffing around our rear bumper, its huge furry ears just peeking over the trunk, there was a huge Grizzly. Luckily my boyfriend had seen what was going on and was able to get far enough away that he wasn't in danger. Slowly, I moved over to the driver seat and turned the key. The bear bristled and backed away, startled by the motor. Afraid to scare him and thus agitate him, but even more afraid to stay and see what he would do to the car, I hit the gas and drove 100 yards away, where my boyfriend was waiting. He jumped in the car and we didn't stop for five miles. When I gave him his keys back, I hugged him and started crying. I like bears, but I prefer them at a distance.
