When I think of the word pilgrimage or pilgrim, i think of people coming to the New World from Europe. These pilgrims came over for many reasons such as escaping religious persecution in their home countries and wanting to spread their religious views in a New World. Others wanted to go explore in hopes of getting rich because their was believed to be gold everywhere. Scientists and philosophers wanted to explore the vast regions of the earth to prove that the world is not flat.
From this i believe that a pilgrimage is a jounrey that one takes to an undiscovered place. From these pilgrimages help make these undiscovered places into sacred places by having people explore and discover them.
