Night Round the Campfire - Derek Bryant

So last night my girlfriend and I spent a few hours around a campfire. The folks there were friends of one of our friend. So we didn't know the people there. But instantly there was the sense of communitas once we sat down. The feeling of people who were just sitting around a campfire eating s'mores and looking for an unspecified good time. There was also a sense of common ground centered around the campfire itself. The fact that each of us was there at all meant we had something in common and were able to relate. There even seemed to be a sort of group togetherness while making a s'more. The act of making s'mores almost became a shared task with everyone. A couple people would be making the marshmellows and taking orders on how brown or burnt they wanted the marshmellow. And then others would put them together with the other ingrediants. It's a strange coming together around a seemingly trivial action, that had become more because it brought everyone together.
