Angela Varga: Buckroe Beach
One might not think of the beach as “wilderness” or “nature” because of the tourist market that is associated with many beaches. However, my friends and I go to Buckroe Beach whenever the weather permits it and I have to disagree. Buckroe is a quiet beachfront and recreation area that’s about half an hour away from CNU on a good day with not too much traffic. There’re hardly any people there when we go and it’s very quiet and serene. Once you get in that water, too, it’s like the world just melts away. We went a couple weeks ago and it was really too cold to do any swimming in the water but I waded in anyway, just for a few minutes. The sand dips down as you get closer to the water and there’s a definite sound barrier from things near the sea. You can really only hear the roar of the ocean and the occasional call of a gull. Being in the water for those few moments, listening to the crash of the waves and the birdcalls made me feel how awesome nature is. It’s so much greater than human existence.
