Angela Varga: Lane and Stand By Me

In Lane’s first chapter, he wrote about one of his personal experiences. He’d been in the woods searching for some sort of experience and before he was about to leave he stopped. He felt that something was coming and waited around. It turned out there was a deer nearby and he felt like that was his sign; his sign of a sacred presence. This reminded me of a scene in the film Stand By Me where the main character Gordon is sitting on the train tracks writing and deer happens by him. This got me thinking about the actual film. It’s considered a coming of age film, but I think you could definitely see it as a spiritual journey film. The plot is that Gordon and his friends are searching for a boy that went missing and most probably got hit by a train. Though this is what Gordy and his friends are searching for they actually change while on their journey and learn who they truly are through their quest. The film could be considered a spiritual journey. Lane’s experience made me think of Stand By Me and made me think: Have I felt a sacredness in a place and waited for any type of sign? Have I inadvertently journeyed somewhere to have a change occur within myself? Maybe I have and maybe I haven’t, though I wouldn’t mind having the same kind of experience.
