Brittany Wissen -- The Phenomenon of Light

Barbara A. Weightman’s article “Sacred Landscapes and the Phenomenon of Light” argues that “light serves as a bridge between interpretation of landscape and religious experience” (59). I agree with this argument, which relates to another concept that is similar called “divine light.” Divine light is used in architecture to describe the feeling one gets when a Cathedral or other place is perfectly lit to create a heightened religious experience. This also relates to our course because we have learned that certain conditions are required to consider a place sacred, and though the phenomenon of light is not one of the axioms, I feel it contributes greatly to the end product.
