Pilgrimage as Liminoid Phenomenon
Image and Pilgrimage
In the book it introduces pilgrimages with ancient origin and can normally be found amongst tribal people. The first phase of pilgrimage is detachment of the individual or group form a fixed point in the social hierarchy. Then the luminal phase occurs which is characterized as the in between phase. An example of this is adolescents. An adolescent is neither an adult nor a child. He or she is going through the process of letting go of the past or their childhood and accepting the new task of being an adult. Liminality is used to apply to all phases of decisive cultural change, where the ordering of thoughts and behaviors are subject to change.
