The Ephemeral Character of Place
Landscape of the Sacred
Lane’s describes the American penchant for mobility and placelessness. It is no secret that America is known for wanting to discover new frontier. Americans have always been intrigued by space, but according to Lane the attachment to particular places may be negligible. Lane argues that to be in one place for life is considered unambitious or unadventurous which is contrast to the American values of mobility. I like the quote “In the US there is more space where nobody is then where anybody is. This is what makes America what it is.” This quote was more so true in the past than it is today. However, it can still hold true for today’s society. Think of all the beaches or cropland wide spaces where very few humans inhabit but where many humans visit or alter.
