Flow and its Exemplification in Cheerleading
Turners "Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture," discusses the concept of flow. Flow is understood to be a mental state where one is fully immersed in what they are currently doing. It is a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the action.
I can apply this concept of flow to my senior year as a cheerleader on my high schools varsity squad and our performance at competition. I'm not going to lie- we really weren't very good. I think our squad had the potential of competing quite well, but due to lack of good leadership, and coaching we suffered at competiton. We actually came in last out of 8 almsot every year at districts. My senior year- however was different. We were sick of always doing poorly and were detirmned that as seniors we would at least attempt to place. That whole season the seniors, and the whole squad for that matter work incredibly hard to try and get in shape so we could really show off our talent at distrcits. When the day came we were all so excited, and nervous that the day had finally come. We stepped on the mats and went craay. We were totally and completely immersed in our routine. We were sticking all of our stunts, executing our carefully rehearsed choreography to a T, and our jumps were hgiher than ever. We ended up coming in 7th as opposed to 8th but we were beyond happy we werent last. I compare the feeling of performing at districts to flow. I think flow was exemplified in our routine, and our complete immersion in our routine that dya at districts.
