Keyuanna Hunt- Outside Reading
I recently read a book by Valentino Achak Deng called "What is the What". The book described the journey of masses of Sudanese (The Lost Boys and Lost Girls)who walked to refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia to get away from the war conflict. These masses of Sudanese had to walk across the desert barefoot, starved with many dieing each day. The writer described one particular day as they were walking in a single file line, they were being shot at from the sky. Everyone began running in different directions. He had ran a long time and hit a fence, he thought he would surely die being away from the group. When suddenly, he was rescued by a desert hermit who gave him fruit and water. He was able to live through and find the group again because of that desert experience. His story is remarkable, expecially the desert trek for all these young boys. They had to piligramge across the desert to reach safety. Through the desert they reached Kenya. The writer's experience was as Lane described as a "placed" experience. A experience that is significant of it's location.
