A Pilgrimage is a journey made to some sacred place as an act of religious devotion. Turner points out that the reason people make pilgrimages’ is to get away to a far holy place approved by all. The typical thing for people is to stay in certain areas for a while meaning not being able to get away from normal routine. These journeys are supposed to be refreshing and clear one from the normal sins that they are tied to. A pilgrimage offers liberation from irreligious social structures. Walking the Appalachian Trail is something we discussed in class and could definitely be considered a pilgrimage.
