Something we discussed a lot was Turner’s use of communitas. Communitas is a relational quality of full unmediated communication, even communion, between definite and determinate identities, which arise spontaneously in all kinds of groups, situations, and circumstances. This is the opposite of a community. A community is any type of social group that usually contains some sort of structure. Though communitas is widely experienced, it has almost never been regarded as a highly regarded or rational object of study by anyone.
