Danielle Creel: Landscapes of the Sacred Part 1

Mythic Landscapes: The ordinary as Mask of the Holy
Sacred Landscape
Mount Rainer or Mount Tahoma is a large active volcano in Washington State. American landscape according to Lane is seen as a kind of mask of the holy. It is explained to hide and reveal certain aspects of the splendor, grace or terror of the divine. Mount Rainier is a perfect demonstrator of this because when there is fog it is hidden, however when it clear outside one can see all the way to the tip of the mountain. Lane goes into further detail saying that the mask is never able to contain or consume the holy, yet neither can the holy be known apart from the mask. Both according Lane must be kept in tension. So the holy aspect of Mount Rainer will always be holy because it cannot separate itself from the divinity. It is no surprise that Mount Rainier is a very popular destination. People are constantly trying to seek the holy and process it.
