Spenser Fleming--Lane and mountains

In Lane's book "The Solace of Fierce Landscape" he describes the magic behind mountains and deserts. The magic being the reason why people climb and traverse these "sacred" locations. The reasons Lane describes are very similar to what Turner describes during liminality. Certain people find themselves driven to these fierce landscapes in hopes to escape, or even find themselves. A liminal Pilgrimage brings the same promises. The physical and mental challenges forces one into the element of the place not the element of the people. In today's world humans recreate their environments to appease themselves, these mountains and deserts are the only untainted places left. They are places to bring us back to simplicity, to what is real and right.
