This past weekend I went on a trip with my girlfriend. It was our one year anniversary so we went up to NYC and stayed with her old college roommate. The city was incredible and much more enjoyable than I remember, I assume having locals with me ensured me having a good time. Where I did not expect to have fun was the bus ride, in fact I was dreading it. A couple hours went by uneventful until we got drawn into conversation. We heard the people talking behind us mention that one of them was going to New York for his birthday. After we wished him a happy birthday we ended up having a great time talking to them. Turner describes communitas as "unmediated communication... which arises spontaneously in all kinds of groups, situations, and circumstances." We experienced a bond with these people just because we were all on a journey together and were able to find common ground in that fact.
