Kealan Sojack-rite of passage

Kealan Sojack 3/15/2010

In class we were recently talking about ancient rites of passage. In particular I remember one example which involved a native American tribe which would stick animal bones into their flesh and then rip them out. The imagery that came to mind after hearing this story was grotesque. Although completely different from that example in many ways, talking about completing a task in order to gain entry into a certain society reminded me of pledging. It is no mystery to people not involved in Greek life that pledging is not a fun experience. Once the process is completed however, you are accepted into the group and cared for as one of their own. The concept of enduring something unpleasant in order to enjoy future benefits is present in both cases.
