In class, Professor Redick talked a lot about his pilgrimage all around the country. One story that matched up most with communitas was his trip to Hawaii and the experience he had around the campground after meeting a new friend along the beach. He had talked about the first time going over to this party that he had heard about and didn't know anybody there except the friend that he had brought with him on his venture to Hawaii and the guy that he met for a brief few minutes on the beach. Automatically, he felt a sense of communitas whilst sitting around the campfire.
A few weeks ago, I went with one of my roommates to a bonfire with about 15 people that I had never met before. Although most of them all knew eachother very well, I automatically felt like I was welcome there and we all seemed to have the same mindset of just wanting to relax and enjoy eachothers company. Until taking this class, I wouldn't have noticed the sense of communitas that we had as a group of people at a bonfire.
