Ryan Pageau- "Axis Mundi"

The concept of an axis mundi confuses me a little. Many different religions claim that there is an axis mundi close to them, or that they know of. According to Lane, The sacred place becomes the point at which the wondrous power of the divine could be seen breaking into the world’s alleged ordinariness. As a result, that fixed point becomes the center of the world, the navel of the earth or axis mundi by which passage can be obtained to the cosmic region beyond, from where all meaning derives.”

It is harder for me to understand this concept when certain religions claim that this axis mundi lies in different places. We even talked about axis mundi in my fine arts class, when studying Muslim art. Certain mosques and places of worship were built specifically where the thought the axis mundi is. I guess each religion may believe in a different axis mundi based on their beliefs.
